Grade 5- Information for quarter 4 report card

Our 4th quarter Spanish Progress Report for 5th graders is different than previous quarters.  On your child's report card, the skill areas will be left blank in the Spanish section of the report card.  Instead, in the comment section you will find your child's current proficiency level in the skills of listening, reading, and speaking listed .   These categories (Novice Low, beginning Novice Mid, and Novice Mid) originate from the Proficiency Guidelines developed by the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages.  The Proficiency Guidelines are descriptions of what an individual can do with any language at each level.  Several key statements from each level are listed in the table below.  With the exposure that students have to Spanish instruction at IH throughout grades 1-5, we expect our students to reach the beginning of Novice Mid.

At this level, the student can:
Novice Low
- understand isolated words and learned phrases in a basic listening or reading passage, and
- answer a few simple questions.
Beginning
Novice-Mid
- understand some key details but may not comprehend the overall main idea of a
  listening or reading passage,
- recognize words and very high-frequency phrases when they are supported by context, and
- answer a variety of simple questions and use learned words when speaking.
Novice Mid
- understand most key details and infer to determine the main idea in a listening or reading passage,
- recognize high-frequency words and phrases and can use word patterns to infer meaning,   and
- answer a variety of simple questions; initiate conversation.

We hope this information provides insight on your child’s current strengths and abilities in Spanish.  Again, your child's current proficiency level in each skill area will be listed in the comment area of the Spanish section of their report card.  Please contact your child’s Spanish teacher if you have any questions regarding this information.

It has been a joy to watch the 5th graders grow and learn over the past 3 years!
